Larry Schug, A Speculation on Spiders

Larry Schug
A SPECULATION ON SPIDERS

A great spider spins an invisible thread,
weaves an invisible web,
ties together every thing, every where, every when.
No one knows the entirety of this web,
where it hangs, what lies between its threads.
We perceive ourselves existing
in one time, in one place, on one strand,
but if we pay attention we feel a vibration,
music in the humming string to which we cling.
Some seek the spider,
some hide from her,
but no one can escape this web,
these shining, singing, silver strands.

  1. The line ” but if we pay attention we feel a vibration,” speaks to the energetic connection we all have…if we pay attention. Wonderful!

  2. “music in the humming string to which we cling.” Isn’t that a perfect line? It sweeps us in, past the spider [but at the same time welcoming the spider to join along] into the hearty core of this fine poem. And everything opens up because of it!

  3. The last two lines “but no one can escape this web,
these shining, singing, silver strands,” roll off the lips and sum it up perfectly.
