THE DOPPELGANGER ROAD
In the northwest corner of the county
lies a mountain road
that twines up a steep hill
seven short switchbacks
up the almost mile
providing a whimsical sight
of Monaco’s streets
racing engines at full throttle
winding their way to legend.
But there is a dark side to driving
down — switchbacks just feet
from prolonged mountain slopes
with no safety railing
falling to the small valley below
that call out to me on those days
angels cry in despair
tempting me to wonder if
with a slight turn of the wheel
I could end my own
or survive the hurtle with perpetual
injuries, the latter unacceptable.
